The global market for kiosks had been rather stagnant over the past decade or so. Technologies had not changed much and the purpose of most kiosks was practically the same – to allow users gather information and to perform cash based transactions. While kiosk technology had not changed, the digital age had created a flurry of devices and technologies that have allowed consumers to bypass a lot of what traditional kiosks offered. Information is now at the fingertips of anyone who has a device with internet connectivity, and a large number of transactions made are cashless. This has created a major quandary for kiosk manufacturers, a lot of whom have decided to go with the flow rather than fight the currents.
A lot of kiosk manufacturers are willing to show a high level of innovation by combining modern concepts such as connected devices, Internet of Things, and cloud computing. A large proportion of these innovations are visible in North America, where the scenario is such that kiosks or locations are being retrofitted with enhanced services that allow users to gain more than simple transactions. For instance, the automotive-based kiosks in Georgia, United States, had begun installing kiosks that allowed customers to renew their vehicle tags. Similar automotive support kiosks were installed in Ohio, where users could perform automated registration of their cars.
A large proportion of these newer kiosks are also offering a lot more in terms of customer self-service. Nevada and a few other states have already implemented information kiosks that double up as self-service kiosks across various major retail locations. These kiosks are capable of providing information as well as allowing customers at malls to pay their bills. This has helped considerably in reducing waiting time and queue time for customers. Interactive kiosks are generating a lot of favorable response after manufacturers have begun incorporating cloud computing tools to create a larger database for users to peruse through. A lot of kiosks are also being used in the healthcare sector to provide users assistance with medical information, pharmaceutical services, and registration services.
