Expanding International Trade Pursuits hold Promise for Bulk Container Packaging Market

Bulk container packaging products are used for high volume packaging. Flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBC), bulk container liners, flexitanks, and barrels and boxes are some of the bulk packaging products that are used for the storage and transportation of bulk commodities. These products are suitable to be used for rail, road, and waterways as transportation means. Oils and fat, food and beverages, pharmaceutical products, and non-hazardous chemicals are some commodities that bulk container packaging products are suitable for. These products differ from each other in terms of holding capacity, constituent elements, and type of products they are suitable for.

Petroleum derivatives such as polypropylene and polyethylene are used in the manufacture of flexitanks. Manufactured as standard 20ft containers, flexitanks are used for transporting non-hazardous liquids. FIBCs are jumbo bags fabricated of woven fabric for the storage and transportation of free lowing products. The constituent material and size of the product container varies in FIBCs to suit the material to be transported. Bulk container liners that are manufactured of woven polyethylene and polypropylene are mostly 20ft and 40ft in size, but can also be custom-made depending on the requirement.

FIBC products due to their high operational efficiency registered the largest share of the bulk container packaging market in 2013. In the same year, flexitanks accounted for a smaller share of the global market; however, this product segment will register highest growth in the coming years. Manufactured of petroleum derivatives, price fluctuations of petroleum impacts this market as well.

In the recent years, increasing vegetable oil exports from Southeast Asian region and wine exports from European countries are exhibiting a high demand for bulk container packaging products. Exporters of vegetable oils favor flexitanks over other products such as drums, barrels, and tank containers due to their cost-effective and higher operational efficiency attributes. For wine exporters, the use of flexitanks is advantageous in the form of less glass and bottling costs, lower import duties, and reduced transportation cost for wine traders.

Regionally, North America is the largest market for bulk container packaging products. In 2013, the region accounted for more than 30% of the overall market.
