With the rising population of the world residing in urban areas, the issue of solid waste management has become a strenuous challenge for municipal authorities of some of the world’s largest urban settings. Since a long long time ago, dumping municipal solid waste into landfills and treating it using some method at the same site has been the commonly adopted course of action across the world. This act has started causing serious implications on the health of the environment. As a result, traditional landfills are being replaced by newer and better ways of municipal solid waste treating, such as pyrolysis, incineration, recycling, and gasification.
Incineration refers to the method of treating municipal waste involving the combustion of waste materials for the purpose of recovery of energy. Normally, a land incineration plant undertakes the combustion of municipal solid waste in controlled environments. During the incineration of the waste, the waste matter is converted into gases, heat, and particles, which are used later on for the generation of electricity. During the process, certain flue gases are also produced and are as part of the dust generated by the system. This dust is treated to be free from pollutants before being released in the atmosphere.
A typical incineration plant comprises equipment such as heat recovery systems (boilers), control systems, and waste receipt and handling systems. Incinerators form a significantly important part of a typical land incinerator plant as they can help reduce the overall mass of solid municipal waste by 80%, depending on the magnitude of material recovery and waste composition post incineration.
The market for land incineration has been exhibiting growth at a highly favorable pace in the past few years and is projected to do so in the years to come as well. Several municipalities and governments across the globe are promoting the use of incineration through sponsorship in land incineration plants.
However, the issue of emission of flue gases in land incineration projects is projected to restrain the overall adoption of this method of waste treatment to a certain extent in the coming years. with proper measure being taken to manage flue gases, the market may be able to gain wider acclaim and increased popularity.
