Global High Intensity Sweeteners Market: Fat-free Fitness Trend Driving Demand

Published Date : Dec 08, 2016

Sugar has been an irreplaceable ingredient of food products across the globe since eternity but in the past decade, it has been realized that high sugar intake leads to several ill-effects in the human body. As a result, a replacement of sugar was required. This requirement is ideally fulfilled by high intensity sweeteners, which are many times sweeter than table sugar (sucrose) and contain significantly fewer calories. Six high intensity sweeteners that are commonly approved as food additives are saccharin, sucralose, neotame, aspartame, acesulfame potassium (Ace-K), and advantame. Here are some of the factors that are augmenting the demand in the global market for high intensity sweeteners.

Prevalence of Diabetes
According to WHO, 422 million people suffered from some type of diabetes in November 2014. These patients are required to observe strict sugar-less diet for rest of their lives, and hence are the primary consumers of high intensity sweeteners.

Approval from Food Regulatory Bodies
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was among the first to approve high intensity sweetener as artificial enhancer and several other food regulatory bodies across the world have followed the suit in recent past. Now considered safe for consumption, various manufacturers in the food and beverage industries have introduced sugar-free products and thereby propelling the global market for high intensity sweeteners.

Growing Obesity Concerns
Excessive sugar-intake leads to body fat. As per the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, two out of three adults are considered overweight in the U.S. while more than 1 in 20 adults and considered to have extreme obesity in the country. This factor is escalating the demand for high intensity sweetener in the regional market of North America.

Fitness Trend
With the widespread outreach of the Internet and social media, awareness for the ill-effects of sugar is on the rise. Consumers are now realizing the health benefits of sugar-free diets and hence, fueling the demand for high intensity sweeteners. Moreover, the demand for dietary supplements used in protein shakes that are sugar-free is escalating.
