Flipkart’s PhonePe Launches Point-of-Sale Device for Small Merchants

PhonePe, the digital payments platform owned by e-commerce retailer Flipkart has launched an indigenous calculator like Point of Sale (POS) device. The device is targeted for small merchants, petrol pumps, and eating joints among others.

Regarding the working, the device is powered by Bluetooth and does not require Internet for merchants to accept payments. The device solely holds an ID allocated to the merchant by PhonePe relying on the consumer’s smartphone data connection. As claimed by PhonePe, the device can function on AA batteries for 8-12 months. The device will undergo a pilot run shortly with 5,000 merchants in Bengaluru before it is rolled out across the country.

Physical and Functional Features Designed for Indian Conditions

PhonePe POS device receives all ticks that make it suitable for Indian shopkeepers to switch to digital payments option- the virtues include easy to use, cheap, and highly durable. With the launch of PhonePe POS, the pace of digital payment option for millions of local merchants and customers will ramp up in India, as commented by a PhonePe executive. The device will be given free to merchants at the time of launch for a nominal security deposit.

The device both physically and functionally has been developed keeping in mind Indian merchants and customers. It runs on regular AA batteries and does not require an Internet connection. Bluetooth which is used as the underlying technology for the working of the device makes the protocol utilized for the transaction to be robust and widely compatible. Further, the technology used ensures several layers of security for merchant and customer transaction to be accomplished in a safe manner.
