Having shaken up the Indian telecom sector big time, with its offer of data at dirt cheap rates and free voice calls for life, Reliance Retail now plans to further up the ante against its well-entrenched rivals with the unveiling of a super cheap Android Go 4G VoLTE smartphone. To be launched under the Lyf brand in collaboration with MediaTek, the Taiwanese maker of chipset, it is expected to garner more subscribers for the new entrant.
Those familiar with the development state that Reliance Industries will likely bundle the smartphone with a Reliance Jio SIM card like it did before with JioPhone – the 4G VoLTE feature phone. This will lower costs to unprecedented levels for a smart device.
Cost the Biggest USP of Reliance Smartphone
Already, the older telcos in India are seen tying up with makers of smartphones to bring down prices of 4G devices to less than Rs.1500 via cashbacks. The upcoming Jio smartphone, however, can beat them in terms of low pricing.
A source familiar with the matter said telecom giant may soon order millions of such 4G smartphones. The move is in line with its efforts to transition around 500 million feature phone users to smartphones, by dramatically lowering the price of the latter. Jio has been attempting to win over similar users through the Jio feature phone and is currently betting big on the Android Go smartphone.
However, Jio may have competition for many other domestic and Chinese handset makers are on course to launch their Android Go-based affordable smartphones in the market. Reliance Retail’s device still may cost much less with on account of Jio subsidy.
