It is a colorless clear liquid with a fruity odor. It reacts with acids and liberates heat along with alcohols. Reaction with alkali metals and hydrides generates flammable hydrogen. Methyl acetoacetate is soluble in water (44 wt %) and is completely soluble in alcohol, ether and ether acetate. Methyl acetoacetate is manufactured by the reaction of methanol with beta-ketone (1,3-diketone) in presence of a catalyst. Other raw material used in production includes acetyl ketene, methane and ethyl acetoacetate among others. Methyl acetoacetate acts as a copromoter in resins and other compounds. Moreover, it is also used as a chemical intermediates in various end-user industries such as pharmaceutical, agro chemicals and others. Additionally, methyl acetoacetate is also used in as an intermediate in manufacturing of dyestuffs and organic pigments.
