In 2014 beer registered a contraction as consumers shifted to the smaller pack sizes in off-premise. On-premise consumption on the other hand did well as tourism increased and consumers felt more confident. Although overall volume decreased brewers were able to capitalise on the smaller pack sizes with a higher price per litre. Beer was also hurt by wine and packaged water becoming increasingly available at competitive price in supermarkets as they arent affected by the 23% VAT rate. The FIFA World Cup event did not fulfill the expectations of on-premise retailers as Portugal experienced early elimination from the tournament
