According to the Bank of Greece, during the period of January to July 2015 foreign arrivals increased compared with 2014. The relevant revenues in direct income were also up. This positive performance was mainly based on the increased arrivals and not on the holiday expenditure as this was slightly reduced compared with last year. However, growth is not expected before 2017, as the capital control restrictions imposed in July are forecast to stay for a long time. Thus consumption is expected to decline significantly, as unemployment is forecast to rise and the majority of products and services are now surcharged with 23% VAT, up from lower VAT coefficients.
